General Information — Wild Red Crowntail Guppy
The Wild Red Crowntail Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a stunning selectively bred strain prized for its rich, fiery red coloration and the unique, spike-like fin rays that give the tail its jagged "crown" appearance. They are an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists.
Appearance: Males display deep, vibrant red tones across the body and fins, featuring dramatic crowntail extensions that give them a bold, textured look in the water. Females are slightly larger with a more rounded body and subtler coloring, carrying the strong genetics needed to pass on these beautiful traits.
Tank Setup: Guppies do well in a well-planted aquarium of at least 10 gallons. They appreciate open swimming space and gentle filtration — strong currents can stress their unique, delicate fin extensions.
Water Conditions: Guppies prefer a pH of 7.0–7.5 and a temperature between 72°F–82°F (22°C–28°C). Consistent, clean water is key to keeping their colors vibrant and fins healthy.
Diet: Guppies are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake or micro pellets supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms to enhance color and vitality.
Compatibility: Fancy Guppies are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish. Avoid fin-nippers, as their flowing, spiked tails can make them a target.
Breeding: Guppies are livebearers and breed readily.
Social Behavior: Guppies are active and social fish. They do best in small groups and are a joy to watch as they display their fins and colors.
