Welcome to Phil's Gills! We strive to breed the best and healthiest fish for your freshwater aquariums. Thank you for looking and happy fish keeping!

You are purchasing a Yellow/Orange Rabbit Snail (Tylomelania sp.). These fascinating invertebrates were tank-bred and raised right here in my home fish room. They are currently at a healthy, active juvenile size of approximately 1 inch and are ready for their new homes.

Rabbit Snails are famous for their elongated, elephant-like faces and highly active personalities. They make an excellent, unique clean-up crew, working tirelessly to graze on algae, detritus, and leftover fish food while adding wonderful character to the bottom of your tank.

These snails will ship in a box for 2 to 3 day shipping depending on your location. Please note that occasionally shipping can take 4 days, but this is not common and is out of our control.

Shipping:

Packages will always ship on Monday or Tuesday. We do this to ensure your livestock arrives safely in case of any issue with the post office. Please see the listing to confirm the shipping method for your order. We do not ship to Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

DOA Policy:

In the unfortunate event of a DOA — while a rare occurrence — please take a photo of the snails in an unopened bag within 2 hours of receiving your shipment. If the snail is deemed DOA, we will always refund the cost or offer you the same value toward another order. Shipping costs cannot be refunded. If the bags have been opened, the DOA policy is voided. We double bag everything we send.

If you have any questions about invertebrate care, please ask before purchasing. Once the snails enter your tank, we are not responsible for uncycled tanks, copper medications, or improper animal care.

General Information — Rabbit Snail (Tylomelania)

The Rabbit Snail is a highly prized freshwater snail endemic to the deep, ancient lake systems of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Renowned for their wrinkly, expressive faces and long, conical shells, they bring an exotic look and helpful cleaning utility to the home aquarium.

  1. Appearance: They feature a long, tapering, textured shell ranging from dark brown to black. Their soft bodies are highly visible, displaying a striking, wrinkled texture in vibrant shades of bright yellow or deep orange.

  2. Tank Setup: They thrive in a mature aquarium of at least 10–20 gallons. They love to burrow slightly, so a sand or smooth gravel substrate is highly recommended. Provide plenty of rocks and open spaces for them to roam. They may occasionally nibble on soft-leaved plants if underfed, but generally leave robust plants like Anubias or Java Fern completely alone.

  3. Water Conditions: Because they are from Sulawesi lakes, they require hard water with plenty of calcium to maintain their shells. They prefer a pH of 7.5–8.5 and a warm temperature between 76°F–84°F. They are highly sensitive to copper medications, so never treat the tank while they are inside.

  4. Diet: Diligent scavengers and algae eaters. Supplement their diet with high-quality sinking veggie wafers, calcium-enriched snail food, Repashy gel formulas, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, kale, or spinach.

  5. Compatibility: 100% peaceful. They are safe to keep with dwarf shrimp, fancy guppies, corydoras, micro-rasboras, and bristlenose plecos. Never house them with snail-eating fish like loaches, large puffers, or aggressive cichlids.

  6. Breeding Behavior: Unlike common aquarium snails that can quickly overpopulate a tank, Rabbit Snails reproduce very slowly. They are livebearers, with the female producing a single white egg-like pod at a time, out of which a fully formed, miniature baby snail emerges.
