General Information — Lemon Blue Eye Pleco

The Lemon Blue Eye Pleco is one of the most popular and stunning color morphs in the aquarium hobby. Unlike true albinos (which have red eyes), these fish possess a brilliant yellow body contrasted by deep, captivating dark blue/black eyes. They are highly efficient algae eaters that bring an incredible splash of color to any tank.

  1. Appearance: They feature a solid, vibrant lemon-yellow body completely free of dark spots. Their most defining feature is their beautiful blue eyes. As they mature, males grow dramatic facial tentacles (bristles), while females stay smooth or have a few small bristles around the snout.

  2. Tank Setup: They thrive in a well-planted aquarium of at least 20 gallons. Provide plenty of caves, rocks, and essential natural driftwood. Scraping driftwood is crucial for their digestion and overall gut health.

  3. Water Conditions: They prefer a pH of 6.5–7.5 and a temperature between 72°F–80°F. Clean, stable water parameters with regular weekly water changes will ensure their yellow coloration stays intensely bright.

  4. Diet: While excellent at grazing on tank algae, they must be supplemented with a varied diet. Feed them high-quality sinking kelp or spirulina wafers, Repashy gel food (Soilent Green), and fresh blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, or green beans.

  5. Compatibility: Incredibly peaceful and passive, making them ideal candidates for community tanks. They can be safely kept with everything from small tetras and rasboras to shrimp and guppies.

  6. Breeding: They are cave breeders and reproduce readily in the home aquarium. The male will lure the female into a tight pleco cave, fertilize the eggs, and fiercely guard/fan the clutch until the fry are free-swimming.

  7. Social Behavior: Active bottom-dwellers that spend their day cleaning surfaces. They are a peaceful, highly functional, and visually striking addition to any freshwater display or breeding setup.
